I didn’t think I would have cared that Evan looked at other girls until he did. I didn’t think I would have cared that he had slept with other girls, or that his head had been turned by the other models, but those thoughts were like daggers in my heart. I wanted him to look at me, and only me. I knew this was a problem because I didn’t live in New York and there was no way we were going to have a solid future together. Evan didn’t want my life; hell, I didn’t even want my life. Jacob didn’t like him, and I didn’t know how to keep his attention.

I could try though. Mom always told me that when I didn’t know how to do something, I could try. And so try, I did.

When we walked into the pizza shop, everyone's head turned.

“Evan!” one of them said. “Thought that you would never get here.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Evan said. “I got here as soon as I could. Guys, this is Emily.”

“Yeah, we know who she is,” one of them said and Evan blushed scarlet.

“Emily, let’s go into my office,” he said and tugged me by the hand. “Do you want some food?”

I nodded as he let me into his office and pointed to his heavy desk chair. I sank into it, and he reached out to brush a stray piece of hair away from my face.

“Cool,” he said. “I’ll be right back. Make yourself comfortable.”

I looked around at the place where Evan spent most of his days. I imagined that he had texted me from this office many times. I also wondered if he had brought any girls back here, besides me. Was I the only one who was so privileged, or had he found a million model girls to lock the door on and seduce? New York, after all, was full of models. In LA, I stood out, and I had fame. But in New York, with the real high fashion models, I felt like I was light years away from anything useful.

I put my feet up on the desk as I pulled out my phone to text Jacob.

Hey, I messaged. Photo shoot done. How is your shoot coming?

Pretty boring, he texted back. Are you alright?

Yes, I’m fine, I typed. Just hanging out with Evan.

OK, be good, he responded and I grumbled.

We’re just getting pizza and chilling at his office, I texted.

Fine, he replied. By the way, the shoot texted me that you were a superstar today.

No, they didn't, I messaged back.

They did, he replied. They could only use three models for the actual campaign, but you are 100% one of them.

Awesome, I typed. I can’t wait to see the shots. It was pretty fun.

???? Who are you and what have you done with Emily? he messaged and I laughed. I didn’t normally like the photos from the shoot, it was true. However, I didn’t normally have Evan as my escort either.

When Evan came back with steaming hot pizza slices, I put my phone down and looked up at him.
